We’re the crew that shows up when your garage door won’t budge at 6 a.m. or when you’re staring at a broken spring and wondering if dinner plans are shot. Every person on this page lives in San Diego County, drives a Mainspring truck, and answers to Carl Dutton. What ties us together isn’t a handbook. It’s the K.E.Y.S. code we signed when we hired on: Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it. That, and we all think a garage door that works quietly is one of life’s underrated pleasures.

Carl Dutton, Owner
I started Mainspring in 1984, naming it for the spring that carries every pound of a garage door’s weight. The name still fits. After 42 years in Santee and across San Diego County, I’ve seen torsion springs snap on Christmas Eve, openers quit during Santa Ana winds, and doors that had “strong opinions” about closing. I still pick up the phone myself some days, and I still sign off on every 90-Day Done Right Promise we put in writing. My desk sits at our Santee shop, but my real office is the cab of a service truck. When I’m not checking that a job finished clean, I’m usually teaching a new apprentice why a spring wound backwards is a spring that’ll be back next month.
Mike R., Lead Technician
Mike joined us in 2017 after eight years running his own small handyman operation in El Cajon. He holds a C-61/D-28 California contractor classification and specializes in torsion spring systems for heavier custom doors, the kind you see on newer builds in Carlton Hills and Sky Ranch. Customers ask for him by name because he explains what broke before he fixes it, and because his truck is organized the way a mechanic’s toolbox should be: every pin, winding bar, and cable sleeve in its place. Off the clock, Mike restores vintage motorcycles in a garage he built himself, which he claims taught him more about alignment than any manual.
Dana L., Senior Installer
Dana came to us in 2019 with a background in commercial storefront systems, and she brought a precision that translated immediately to residential installs in Santee’s hill neighborhoods, where door frames settle and nothing is quite plumb. She’s factory-certified on Clopay, Amarr, and Wayne Dalton lines, and she’s the person Carl sends when a job involves custom wood overlay or a full-frame replacement on a home in Marana Farms. Dana keeps a notebook of every unusual framing condition she’s encountered, which the rest of the crew borrows when they hit something strange. She lives in Lakeside, commutes with coffee that’s too hot to drink, and has a dog who recognizes the sound of her service van.
James T., Service Coordinator
James is the voice you hear when you call (619) 762-3668 at 10 p.m. on a Saturday. He’s been with Mainspring since 2021, and before that he dispatched for a plumbing outfit in La Mesa, so he knows the difference between an emergency and an emergency. James schedules our four Santee-area trucks, tracks parts inventory, and makes sure Mike or Dana isn’t driving to Rancho San Diego when the job’s actually in Mission Gorge. He lives in Santee proper, grew up playing ball at Cameron Yards, and can usually tell you which cross streets a caller is describing before they finish the sentence. He also keeps a stash of good coffee at the shop, which the field crew appreciates more than they admit.
Elena V., Apprentice Technician
Elena started with us in early 2024, rotating through every phase of the trade before she picks a specialty. Right now she’s shadowing Mike on spring replacements and learning door balancing from Dana, and she’s already passed her first OSHA 10-hour certification. She grew up in a house with a garage door that squealed for three years, so she understands the customer side better than most. Elena asks questions that remind the senior techs why they do things a certain way, and she’s the reason we recently reorganized how we store safety cables on the trucks. She lives in an apartment near Gillespie Field and is saving for her first set of professional winding bars.
